HALLOWEEN 2018: YOU ARE MY SUN, MY MOON & ALL MY STARS

DIY

Let me just put this out there. I had been planning my costume for months now. This was the earliest I had ever started thinking about Halloween. It was SEPTEMBER. It was going to be me and my friend as Ice Queen and Fire Queen! I even ordered a silver wig for myself. But I could tell we weren’t really ecstatic about it. So two nights before Halloween I saw these moon and sun costumes on Pinterest and we HAD to do it. But I only had two weekdays to execute it, so here’s how I pulled it off.

I already had the dress (from a Sabo Skirt sample sale in Sydney, Australia) and the wig, so it wasn’t too difficult. The only daunting task was the headdress. So I took a late night trip to Walmart and came home with a tiara, an ornament from the holiday section and a necklace that had a metal moon on it. I made this, rushing to finish, in 40 minutes. I really wish I could have documented this better, but feel free to ask any questions about the directions!

DIY MOON/SUN HEADDRESS:

Supplies:

  • Metallic Spraypaint

  • Jewels or necklaces to use as decoration

  • Cardboard or Paper Plate

  • Headband (or in my case Ornament bent into headband)

  1. Spray paint skewers a metallic color and let dry

  2. Prepare headband by painting or creating. The ornament I had was a wire ball, so I disconnected some of the wires to create a tiara like effect (here’s a picture where I really had no idea what I was doing)

  3. Prepare jewels by taking apart necklaces (mine was $3 from Walmart) and I snapped off some of the rings attached to it

  4. Cut out paper plate (gives you an easy arc shape) or cardboard piece in an arc shape and spray paint to match - this will be what the skewers will attach to

  5. Hot glue cardboard piece to tiara or headband

  6. Hot glue skewers - you can do this in a varying pattern like the sun headdress shown here (or just blindly glue them all like me because I was rushing)

  7. Wait for it to completely cool and attach jewels or other pieces of cardboard in shapes that you want painted to match the skewers

  8. Ta-da! You have a gorgeous headdress!
